I don't remember a separate boat ride to Bear Mtn. As I recall the trip to Rye Beach started at Battery Park, when up the Hudson past Bear Mtn to West Point, turned around and then went to Playland.
The return was at night, but I think we came down the East River back to Battery Park.
I'm glad Jim affirmed that "Big" was filmed at Rye Beach. I thought I recognized some of the sites in that movie but was never sure.
I too seem to remember seeing the odd deck chair floating by. It must have been the girls from Stella Maris that threw them over. We were perfect ladies and gentlemen at Delehanty and would never do such a thing :)
